Aluminium–air batteries (Al–air batteries) produce electricity from the reaction of oxygen in the air with aluminium. They have one of the highest energy densities of all batteries, but they are not widely used because of problems with high anode cost and byproduct removal when using traditional electrolytes. This has restricted their use to mainly military applications. However, an electric vehicle with aluminium batteries has the potential for up to eight times the range of a lithium-ion battery with a significantly lower total weight

Scope of the market:

Aluminium–air batteries are primary cells, i.e., non-rechargeable. Once the aluminium anode is consumed by its reaction with atmospheric oxygen at a cathode immersed in a water-based electrolyte to form hydrated aluminium oxide, the battery will no longer produce electricity.

This battery uses the oxidation of aluminum at the anode and the reduction of oxygen at the cathode to form a galvanic cell. In the process the aluminum is completely consumed to produce aluminum hydroxide. The metal air battery has a very attractive energy density because part of the reactants come from the air.

The Al/air battery system can generate enough energy and power for driving ranges and acceleration similar to gasoline powered cars...the cost of aluminium as an anode can be as low as US$ 1.1/kg as long as the reaction product is recycled.

The total fuel efficiency during the cycle process in Al/air electric vehicles (EVs) can be 15% (present stage) or 20% (projected), comparable to that of internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEs) (13%).

Phinergy is an Israeli clean energy company developing metal-air technology, turning metals – namely aluminum and zinc - into a new way to store, transport and generate clean and safe energy.

In March 2021, Phinergy and Indian Oil formed a Joint Venture in India for collaboration in the sector of Al-Air battery system. This includes research and development, customization, assembly, manufacturing and sale of aluminium-air batteries for the Indian market, specifically electric vehicles.

On February 4, 2020, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., the largest commercial oil company in India, announced that it had entered into a partnership with Phinergy, an energy start-up, to develop and produce innovative metal-air batteries, a feasible solution for long-distance electric-vehicle travel.

Uses:

These batteries can be used, for example, as reserve batteries in telephone exchanges and as backup power sources.

Aluminium–air batteries may become an effective solution for marine applications for their high energy density, low cost and the abundance of aluminum, with no emissions at the point of use (boats and ships). Phinergy Marine, and several other commercial companies are working on commercial and military applications in the marine environment.
